Balms’ new single “Candle” is a grungy rocker’s dream

Balms’ anticipated album Mirror hits the streets in February 2019 and the intriguing taste they’ve given us so far is their newest single, “Candle.” Self-proclaimed bummer pop, this chugging indie rock jam might make us a little more anxious if it weren’t for the cooing, sweet vocals shining through the darkness. It’s like Grizzly Bear took a dip in the grunge bath and we want to jump in. Every part of this song—the composition, the lyrics, the feelings—is a multilayered mélange that’s hard to shake. “I want your soul,” he says, a charming, echoing call. Songs like this are why categories like dream rock exist. -Michelle Kicherer, Associate Editor

The All-New Insane release debut EP "Good Afternoon"; play Rocketown 12.12

There is something endearing about a band playing what they call "spooky rock and catchy tunes" at a venue where the mission directly names Christ. But The All-New Insane -- who do indeed have the catchy tunes -- will make it happen on December 12th at Rocketown. The group, made up of Friends For Sale's Baker Legate and Sweetrocket's Brian Simcox, has spent their year releasing singles, playing local shows, and recording their debut EP, Good Afternoon. That EP has just dropped on the group's Bandcamp page; it includes all of their previously released singles from the year, as well as two new tracks called "Fake Affection" and "Blush". Catch The All-New Insane's electric live show at Rocketown on 12/12, and take a listen to Good Afternoon below. - Will Sisskind

Devon Church celebrates LP release at Alphaville tonight 11.30

Former Exitmusic member Devon Church (whom we interviewed here) has released his solo debut album “We Are Inextricable.” While holding on to many of the dream-like qualities of his previous band, his material features a more intimate and introspective style of writing. His voice is slightly rougher now, bearing a world-weary storytelling approach. “Draw the knife of your beauty one more night – cut these fibers now that tie me to your bed.” The artist will be celebrating the album release show at Alphaville tonight (11.30), the record can be streamed and purchased at the Felte bandcamp page here. - Dave Cromwell

Color Tongue unveils video for "Over The Moon" + plays Sunnyvale 11.29

Brooklyn psych rockers Color Tongue are premiering here their new video for single Over the Moon, from their three-single EP Bealing Bell, released this past September. The track is (some kind of) love song for a passerby that's at once sweet and borderline indecent, including lyrics like "I'd be over the moon, if you walk with me, we'd fork and we'd sppon." Blending a variety of genres in unexpected and psychedelic ways, the song is mostly based on a colorfully arranged reggae beat, although after minute four things change quite radically, with a slow reprise suddenly morphing into a wall of noise finale. The video itself is also a mix of different footage, where home videos depicting the band are mixed and faded with vintage B-Movies, creating a glittering stream-of-consciousness effect. Color Tongue will celebrate this release with a show at Sunnyvale on November 29 with OOX, Haunted Horses NYC, Castle Black and Private Siren.
