CD of The Month: The Canoes

From the opening explosion of the debut album, Roger, from the Evanston band The Canoes on the track "We'll Meet in Minnesota" I knew I was hearing something special. The band has such a full sound, that borrows from some of the best bands of the early '90's like Cracker and Dinosaur Jr. It so refreshing to hear that straightforward fuzzed out roar of the guitar again, and that sound carries through out the album.

Thematically the album deals heavily with what it means to live in the Midwest and specifically Chicago (see, "Illinois, Chicago"). You can tell this is a home recording and at times the vocals get a bit washed out, but this is solid debut from a band with a lot potential and an approach that more bands should embrace. You can download Roger for free from the band's bandcamp page.

The Canoes are performing on July 28th at Abbey Pub with The Singleman Affair and Jesse W. Johnson.

I remember these guys jamming in our garage when i was only 8. now they are on their way to being web sensations. This is badass. Good shit bros!
Hell yes

The Canoes are the best. I may be biased because i used to be able to hear them practicing from my bathroom, but this is a great album. I'm glad they are receiving the recognition they deserve!

Stephen Paul Smoker
Ripe Fruit

mp3

Stephen Paul Smoker released his new album Ripe Fruit last week. The album an eclectic romp shifting from the fast paced, driving rhythm of "In Cairo" to the somber pluck guitar of "Cold As A Stone". This album seems meditative and psychedelic at the time. The are many moments through out at quite, almost restful. One of my favorites are the flute interlude in "The Light On The First Day of Spring... Pt 1.". In many way Stephen Paul Smoker is a throw back the 60's, but the way he builds his melody's also feel very modern. Ripe Fruit is just that, fresh and ready to be consumed.
