The Deli Philly's Featured Artist(s) Poll Winner: Tulpa

The Tibetan Buddhist believe that “’tulpa’ is a concept in mysticism and the paranormal of a being or object which is created through spiritual or mental powers.” Philly indie rockers, who bare the same name, just think that “it sounds cool.” And judging by the three-piece’s love for the single, “We Did It Again,” from 2003’s Biker Boyz soundtrack, which features the unholy union of Metallica, Ja Rule, and Swizz Beats, and their respect for artists like Palm, Vunderbar, and Mile High Club, we think that it would be fun to grab a few beers and pick their brains about music. You’ll have the opportunity to do so this Friday, July 15 at World Café Live, where Tulpa will be performing at the venue’s fledgling Spotlight Artist Series, alongside Brooklynites Goodfight. But first, you can learn a little more about The Deli Philly’s recent Featured Artist(s) Poll Winners below.

The Deli: How did you start making music?

Tulpa: So I was living above a Mexican church, and they decided to sell me their drum kit. With that kit and some very courteous neighbors, we were able to get a practice spot goin for free. Born out of the Buttonwood Collective.

TD: Where did the name Tulpa come from?

T: It comes from Tibet. But we like it, because it sounds cool. Also everyone we tell has to ask a second time what our name is.

TD: What are your biggest musical influences?

T: We all have pretty distinct taste, but between us I'd say, The Whitest Boy Alive, Khruangbin, and Doctor Manhattan.

TD: What artists (local, national and/or international) are you currently listening to?

T: We've been listening to a lot of local music these days and meeting the fantastic folks behind it. Bands like Slomo Sapiens, Lady HD, and Swim Camp. On the national level, bands like Mild High Club, Vunderbar, and Palm.

TD: What's the first concert that you ever attended and first album that you ever bought?

T: We took our first Band Field Trip to go see Boy Lawyer (Child Attorney) at Kung Fu Necktie. In terms of albums, our three were: New Found Glory, Self Titled (x2), The Beatles, Seargeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band.

TD: What do you love about Philly?

T: Ben Franklin.

TD: What do you hate about Philly?

T: Fuck the PPA.

TD:  What are your plans for 2018?

T: New tour, new album, and a whole lot more new friends if 2017 was any indication.

TD: What was your most memorable live show?

T: The Final Score in Bensalem. Please never ask us about it again. Except the band Dean rips, look ‘em up.

TD: What's your favorite thing to get at the deli?

T: Chicken Salad on Rye, Reubens, and a whole lotta Potato Salad.
